Netafim required a radio system that is reliable, long-lasting, requires no maintenance or external power sources, simple to deploy and that easily connects to existing sensors or controllers in the field and to the existing computerized control systems.
Netafim is the global leader in drip and micro-irrigation solutions focused on providing solutions for sustainable agriculture. The company operates in 150 countries with 13 factories and 3000 employees throughout the world, and annual sales over $750M. Its systems enable growers to maximize food production with the lowest environment impact. Since introducing the world’s first drip irrigation system in 1966, Netafim has led the sector by developing reliable, simple and affordable products helping farmers worldwide achieve optimal and sustainable results. In order to improve its systems, Netafim required a radio system that is rigid, long-lasting, requires no maintenance or external power sources, simple to deploy and that easily connects to the existing sensors controllers in the field and to the existing computerized control systems provided by Netafim.
rNet system (our OEM solution for Netafim, based on the MetrySense-3000 technology) proved to be the ideal solution for Netafim, and in 2011 Metrycom and Netafim entered a long term agreement for the supply of rNet units for Netafim’s real-time crop management decision support system (DSS), the uManage™. rNet provides the entire communication needs of the irrigation system, including a state-of-the-art IP-Mesh radio (6loWPAN) communication network, cellular gateways which communicate with multiple clusters of remote sensor units (RTUs) and a MetryView server, which connects the units in the field with Netafim’s uManage server. rNet can be powered from a miniature solar panel, or alternatively use internal lithium batteries that last 5 years in the field before a battery replacement is required. It enables 2-way communications, supports dozens of meters and sensors types (such as water meters, temperature, pressure, moisture, humidity, wind direction & velocity and solar radiation sensors and more), integrates seamlessly into Netafim’s management system, highly reliable and proven to be more cost-effective than any other existing systems in operation today. Since launch, Netafim sold thousands of radio units to its customers.
